Want to learn how to communicate in sign language with your deaf friends, co-workers, patients, clients… at least the basics? Then this is the place to start! We’ll give you 10 weeks of the basic signs you’ll need to get started to be able to communicate in American Sign Language.

Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) has a Pittsburgh chapter (Hearing Loss Association of Pittsburgh) with meetings held at DePaul School for Hearing and Speech in Shadyside on the third Saturday of each month except June (Chapter Picnic), July, August and December (Chapter Holiday Party). At the meetings, which start at 10AM, the first 30 minutes are a meet and greet session which is enjoyed with light refreshments and at 10:30 an informational meeting is held until Noon. This meeting is definitely participant friendly, all meetings are captioned and the meeting room is equipped with an infrared sound amplification system. The group is diverse, includes people with hearing loss and often their spouse or significant other – and very often people from the University of Pittsburgh’s Audiology program. The audiology students come to learn about our needs, and we often learn from them. In fact, in January 2009, as a result of this partnership, a class titled “Learning to Hear Again” was designed for and offered to HLAP participants! So feel free to come and join in any of our meetings!
Something new to Pittsburgh as of November of 2008 is the addition of the Center for Hearing & Deaf Services (HDS) as a community education center for the Pennsylvania Initiative on Assistive Technology (PIAT) Lending Library. The library is run by Temple University with community centers throughout Pennsylvania. Part of PIAT’s activities is assessing eligibility and providing free telephone communication devices to the hard of hearing and Deaf populations – referred to as TDDP (Telephone Device Distribution Program). TDDP is offered in most states across the nation and in Allegheny County, there are now two lending locations: HDS at 1945 Fifth Avenue in Pittsburgh and Three Rivers Center for Independent Living (TRCIL) at 900 Rebecca Avenue in Wilkinsburg.

Located in the Shadyside area of Pittsburgh, DePaul is easily accessible from four directions:
From the West: Follow 376 (Parkway) East to Homestead-Squirrel Hill Exit; left of the exit onto Forward; remain on Forward, crossing Murray and bearing right up the hill; left onto Shady; follow Shady across Fifth Avenue; left onto Alder.
From the East: Follow 376 (Parkway) West to Homestead-Squirrel Hill Exit; left off the exit onto Forward; remain on Forward, crossing Murray and bearing right up the hill; left onto Shady; follow Shady across Fifth Avenue; left onto Alder.
From the South: Proceed North through the Liberty Tunnels and across the Liberty Bridge; follow signs to Bigelow Boulevard; proceed on Bigelow to Baum Boulevard; left onto Baum; right onto S. Highland; left onto Alder.
From the North: Proceed South on 279; cross the Veteran’s Bridge; follow signs to 376 (Parkway) East; proceed to Homestead-Squirrel Hill Exit; left off of the exit onto Forward; remain on Forward, crossing Murray and bearing right up the hill; left onto Shady; follow Shady across Fifth Avenue; left onto Alder. OR if you live east of 279 (like Glenshaw, Allison Park, etc) cross the Allegheny River via the Highland Park Bridge, bear right on Allegheny Blvd to the stop light. Turn left, go up the hill past the zoo, through the stop sign and take a left at the next intersection. This will take you to Highland Avenue. Go right and follow Highland through Highland Park and East Liberty to Alder St. and turn left. School is on your right.
Bus Routes: Take either 71C or 500 buses to Highland Ave. & Alder St. Walk right on Alder St. for 3 blocks, crossing Carron St., Yardley Way, and Emerson St. DePaul should be on right immediately after crossing Emerson. The 71C can be caught downtown, on the Hill, or in Oakland. The 500 comes from Westview through downtown and Oakland to Shadyside & Highland Park. The 71C can be caught in opposite direction from Wilkinsburg.

The Deaf-Blind Support Group is a support group that meets on the second Thursday of every month from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Hearing and Deaf Services, 1945 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA.
The purpose of this group is to address issues related to Deaf-Blindness and the impact that vision and hearing loss has on the individual as a whole. In addition to addressing practical issues, such as transportation concerns and employment issues, the group focuses on the emotional impact of hearing and vision loss. It addresses the different stages of coping that an individual may experience through the process of losing their sight or hearing.
The group is open to anyone who is Deaf-Blind or who is losing their vision and, or hearing. Family members are also welcome to attend. The group is facilitated by a professional.
